Crossing into Canada

What can I bring into Canada?

We recommend buying grocery items and bait after you arrive in Canada to make your trip across the border as smooth as possible. If you must bring items across, you are allowed the following free of duty and taxes:

Alcohol: up to 8.5 liters of beer or 1.5 liters of wine or 1.14 ounces of liquor.

Tobacco: up to 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars.

Commercially packaged food, or cooked food is usually allowed but must be declared. To avoid any issues, we strongly suggest that you purchase your food in Thunder Bay before heading up to Armstrong Station. You can find a list of our recommended grocery stores on our Local Information page.

Please note that there may be further restrictions on the above limits, and this information is subject to change.

What can't I bring into Canada?

Live bait is not permitted to be brought into Canada. We recommend calling in an order ahead of time to Silver Minnow Bait (+1 807 683 3778) and picking it up on your way to our base.

Cannabis products, including medical marijuana and CBD oil are not allowed to cross the border into Canada. Once you have arrived in Ontario, there are places to legally purchase these products if you wish to do so.

Firearms are generally not allowed to be brought into Canada, but there may be exceptions for hunting and sporting events. Firearms must always be declared at the border and you will need to complete the necessary paperwork.

Fishing licenses for Americans

All visitors age 18 years and older require two documents to legally fish: an Ontario Outdoors Card and a fishing licence. Your licence is printed on the back of your Outdoors Card. If you don't already have a valid Outdoors Card, we recommend purchasing it at least one month before your trip, as they generally take around 20 days to arrive by mail. If your card does not arrive before your trip, make sure to print out the Licence Summary to keep with you.

Both documents can be bought online via this link. Visitors under the age of 18 do not need their own fishing license or Outdoors Card as long as they are accompanied by someone who carries them. Keep in mind that fish caught by those under the age of 18 count towards the limits of the license holder.
